It is a technique to use amongst practitioners that when dealing with persons that have some sort of problem, such as self esteem issues, that they go back into their life and break it down piece by piece. An example is a person who presents with no confidence because they feel worthless.
Going back into such a persons life will come to a point where at that time they did not feel worthless and was actually quite confident. For example, "I was so happy because I got a push bike for Christmas". This is where the practitioner finds out what happened to change things from that point on. It is generally a traumatic event that was not resolved or it was a misconception in that persons mind.
Once identified these issues can be addressed. Up until that point where the balance is achieved the person is said to be a lost soul. Not lost as in the true sense, but one who has wondered off the path and not traveled their natural path of a life with complete happiness and fulfillment.
